The Library has been divided into different sections for its smooth functioning:
- Circulation Section: Issue and return of books is handled with the help of computers. In this Section located on the First Floor, readers can get themselves enrolled as member of the Library. The timings of issue and return of books are 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on weekdays.
- Reference and Readers' Advisory Service: One is welcome to avail this service at the Reference Desk on the First Floor Reading Hall of the Library. This service is available for all the 12 hours the Library remains open. New entrants to the University are invited to the Orientation Course conducted in the beginning of the academic session. The Library also arranges books on inter-library loan from other libraries on specific demand.
- Display of Books / Exhibitions: Every Monday, new books are displayed at the Display Window near the entrance of the Library to bring these to the notice of readers. Exhibitions are also arranged periodically on some topical interest or on a particular subject on the First Floor.
- Theses and Text Books Section: Housed on the Ground Floor, it allows access to text books, theses, rare books, backfiles of newspapers and manuscripts. This special material is not lent out. Text books reading facility is available for extended hours viz. 8:00a.m to 10:00 p.m. on all days of the week.
- Acquisition Section: Located on the Third Floor of the Library, this Section acquires books and other reading material selected by the Library staff as well as recommended by the Chairpersons of various Departments.
- Periodicals Section: The Library subscribes to about 600 journals, magazines and newspapers. The Periodicals Section located on the Third Floor of the Library, makes available these current sources of information. The opening hours of the Section are 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
- Technical Section: Before the reading material is made available for use on the stacks, it is technically processed in this Section, located on the First Floor of the Library.
- Computer Section: This section is located on the Second Floor of the Library. The section houses the main server, the CD server, Multimedia system, scanners and printers. It manages the working of the entire Computer System of the Library.
- Binding Section: Housed on the Ground Floor, behind Special Collection section of the Library, is the Library Bindery fitted with the latest binding machines. Apart from undertaking routine binding of Library reading materials, it attends to small repair jobs brought by students. It has facilities of comb and spiral bindings, lamination etc.
- Manuscripts and Rare Books Section: The section, located at the ground floor, has two kinds of holdings i.e. Manuscripts and the Rare books. A total of 1492 manuscripts are in Hindi, Urdu, Persian, Sanskrit, Punjabi and Sharda script. starting from hindu scriptures, it covers a range of subjects like Persian Court Etiquette, Poetry, writings of Sikh Gurus, translations and the documents pertaining to Maharaja Ranjit Singh's Court. Rare books being another category, are around 20,000 in number. Starting from 1634 A.D. to the present, these collections are diverse and from important discipline. Some of the important themes are as follows:
- Mutiny Records.
- Writings on different tribes of North-Eastern States & Andaman Nicobar by different English authors.
- Reports on the resultes of scientific voyages (H.M.S. Challenger).
- Educational Records published by the Govt. of India since colonial days.
- Reports and Surveys of the flora and fauna of the British India.
- Atlases. (both historical and Geograhical)
- Imperial Gazetteer of India.
- Natural history of plants.
- Books on Art, Architecture and Painting.
- Wrtings of the Viceroys and Governor-Generals.
- Biographies.
- English Factory Records.
- Religious literature pertaining to temple, Gurudwara and Mosque.
- English literature on Shakespeare and George Bernard Shaw.
- Books on Sanskrit and Hindi literature, history.
- Books written by medieval writers and travellers.
- Laboratory results from different laboratories of India on scientific subjects and many more...
A number of scholars from Europe,US and especially Arab countries visit our repositiry every year, in connection with their research work.These collections are invaluable for research scholars and the policy framers.Genuine research scholars and teachers can access these records on the production and confirmation of their identity and the needs.The Archive at present are making every possible effort to digitise its holdings for its wider accessibility.
